Throughout the Revolution, Americans created a variety of flags based on the June 14, 1777 resolution that the flag, “be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” On October 4, 1779, the American Ship Alliance first flew this flag, with its stars arranged in a 3-2-3-2-3 pattern.
