This note card features a historic silk banner from the Museum's collection. In 1824, Philadelphia celebrated the Marquis de Lafayette's triumphant return with a grand parade past Independence Hall. Artist John Archibald Woodside painted this banner for the "Victuallers of Philadelphia" — the city's butchers — who marched in the procession. The composition centers on Lafayette's portrait, flanked by allegorical figures of Fame and Liberty crowning him with laurels. A fascinating detail: Woodside painted over the word "Female," likely correcting an error.
