This postcard features a needlework mourning picture from the Museum's collection, created in response to George Washington's death on December 14, 1799. Probably stitched by a young woman on silk fabric painted by Philadelphia artist Samuel Folwell, the picture combines symbols of America — an eagle — with emblems of grief, including a weeping willow and urn. Young women often created such pictures at schools for girls and young ladies, demonstrating their skill, refinement, and gentility. When displayed in the parlor, these needlework pieces served as both personal memorials and markers of the family's social standing.
