This note card features an item from the Museum's collection — paper currency issued by the Continental Congress during the American Revolution. The bill displays an eagle attacking a crane and bears the Latin motto "EXITUS IN DUBIO EST" (The Outcome is in Doubt). Due to the Congress's inability to tax and prevent depreciation, combined with widespread British counterfeits, these notes became nearly worthless, inspiring the phrase "Not Worth a Continental."
