When Philadelphia's Victuallers — the city's butchers — marched to honor the Marquis de Lafayette's triumphant return, they carried this silk banner through the streets past Independence Hall. Woodside's composition captures allegorical figures of Fame and Liberty crowning Lafayette with laurels, a powerful tribute to the Revolutionary hero.
